Look Me In The Eye
Worship Series - Outside My Own Little World

We continue our worship series, Outside My Own Little World. Some days it feels overwhelming to care for our own. On top of that, it can feel overwhelming to care for our neighbors and share God’s love in the world. It’s easy to lose our sense of purpose. Matthew West’s song “My Own Little World” encourages us to move from our “own little world” to be the hands and feet of Christ. How do we find our purpose personally and as a church?

Sermon:  "Look Me In the Eye"
Scripture: James 2:14-17; Matthew 25:31-40
How many times have we passed by the opportunities to be in true mutual and reciprocal relationship? Becoming involved to the point of love (loving neighbors . . . and who is my neighbor?) is a messy thing. Jesus’ radical table ministry requires personal transformation in the ways we relate to each other. Is there such a thing as insiders and outsiders? Aren’t we all humanity? We seek to dare to commit to deeper and more mutual relationships as we come to the table this day. We ask, “Who is not at the table, that we can go out and make sure to invite?” And when we do, we may find we need bigger tables!

Stewardship 2018: Renew, Recommit, Rejoice

The Stewardship Committee would like to thank you for your contributions in helping our community of faith know and grow in Christ. We can make a difference through supporting our church with our gifts, time, and finances. Our goal this year is to get 240 pledges for our operating fund in 2018. Imagine what that can help us do as a congregation to spread the Glory of God. We also want to make you aware that our fiscal year for 2018 will run from April 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018, which is an abbreviated one running for 9 months. We will revert back to a calendar year campaign for 2019. We thank Sunday’s speakers for sharing their stories Outside of their Own Little World.

Finance Committee News

The Finance Committee and Pastor Chris give thanks to God for the generous heart of Shady Grove United Methodist Church. We celebrate with you that our first mile giving into the shared global mission of the United Methodist Church (commonly called our "Apportionments") are 100% paid. So much is made possible through this giving, including our quick response to crises all over the world. Also, the last few months have taken us from an operating deficit for the year to a surplus as we seek to grow in the ministry God has given us here: to invite people into lives that are rooted in the love of God, rising to newness of life in Jesus Christ, and reaching our community and world through relevant and life-giving service, by the power of the Holy Spirit. With God's help, let's keep growing!
Note: Each month the finance reports are posted to www.shadygroveumc.net/finance.

Building Committee Update

On Monday, January 8, Church Council and the Building Committee met to continue the discussion of the proposed scope and cost of our building expansion.  During that discussion, the group intentionally reviewed:
  • the history of the master plan for the Shady Grove campus,
  • the steps that led us to the current design,
  • the need for balance between worship, education and fellowship, and
  • how our building structures may facilitate or discourage participation in the balance of worship, education and fellowship.
The consensus of the assembled group was to press forward with the building expansion.  However, before making a final recommendation to the church, the Building Committee has been asked to meet with our architect and general contractor to -
  • explore several value engineering opportunities, and
  • review the design to ensure that we build what is necessary to enable the discipleship building process, pursue a culture of connection of relationships and balanced discipleship, and grow a greater sense of excellence.
The Building Committee is working diligently to complete this interim work and report to Council at their January 23 meeting.

Yours in Christ,
Rex Hockemeyer, Building Committee Chair

COMPASS: Finding Direction At Shady Grove

What do Christians believe about God? Who are Methodists? Are they different from other Christians? When will I learn to open the Bible with confidence? How do I help others the way Jesus did? Could I make time for God everyday? What are my gifts and talents for serving others? Where do I fit in at Shady Grove? We’ve all asked ourselves some version of these questions at moments of our lives. We would like to invite you to discover some of the answers with a NEW small group experience. Whether you are new to the church and looking to get connected or a familiar face looking to take your commitment to the next level (or somewhere in-between!), this group is for you. A guide will lead you through this adventure, searching for answers from within yourself with the help of United Methodist resources. Sundays, 9:30-10:30 am, February 4-March 25, education building room 201. Please contact Lauren Adkins if you are interested in learning more about this journey. EMAIL LAUREN
