This Week in Worship

Altars, Altars Everywhere

Psalm 84  Millions suffer from anxiety or depression. If you don't, chances are you know someone who does. In our series, "Spiritual Affective Disorder," we are taking a look at spiritual practices to get us out of the mid-winter blues and into the light of our lives. Life can be serious business. Sometimes we wonder if there's much good in the world.
Where do you think God's dwelling place is? The Psalmist speaks of longing to be in God's house. Indeed, being in what feels like a sacred place can transform and inspire us. Instead of thinking that finding God requires us to go to a designated place like church, what if we created spaces that reminded us of the sacred wherever we are? This week you are invited to create an altar in your home that can remind you that God dwells in all places.

  • Have you considered being an usher, welcome center host, worship leader, flower team distribution, communion setup, choir, song leader, vocalist, sound tech or instrumentalist in TestifyRVA? EMAIL Frank Basil and he will get you connected with the right person.

2nd Annual Variety Show and Dessert Fundraiser-February 9, 2020

Come support your SGUMC youth on February 9 @ 3pm in the Fellowship Hall! These very talented and very generous youth have volunteered to use their gifts to raise some money for the YOUTH SUMMER MISSION TRIPS they love and find so impactful in their lives and the communities they serve.
In recent years we've seen mission trip costs rise and have had to become increasingly creative about fundraising for these important and formative experiences for our youth. The afternoon will be entertaining and a great investment in our summer mission trip programs.
The fundraiser tickets are $20 for adults,$10 for children and youth, and this year we’ve added a family ticket of $50. Advanced tickets can be purchased with cash or check at the youth scrip card table in the Narthex of the Sanctuary or at the door the day of the event.
Please EMAIL Cindy Basil to ask questions or get involved.

Parenting Teen Survival Group

Our middle and high school youth are facing challenges that are in some ways the same as in years past, while in some ways are completely new and different versions of the same struggles. That means parents are reliving and processing anew these same issues with their teens. We invite any and all parents of teens to come be a part of a community created to support and bring peace to those parenting in this unique season of life. This group will continue the work of It Takes a Village at Shady Grove UMC under a new name, Parenting Teen Survival Group. Our hope is that you feel this community as a life raft in what can be the rough waters of raising teens.
NEXT MEETING: February 12 - Save the Date for future get-togethers and events March 11, April 8, and May 13
