New Sermon Series - Once Upon a Parable

"That same day, Jesus left the house and sat by the lakeside, but such large crowds gathered round him that he got into a boat and sat there. The people all stood on the shore, and he told them many things in
parables." Matthew 13: 1-2

It has been said that Jesus' parables are like imaginary gardens with real toads in them. In other words, Jesus uses story to engage the imaginations, desires, and expectations of his listeners on a journey to uncover the reality of God through startling turns (croak!) or unexpected comforts (ribbit!) How can these uncovered truths told "once upon a parable" help us uncover the story of God with us, inviting new life everyday?

Sermon:  "Working with Weeds"
Scripture: Matthew 13: 24-30, 36-43

"Let them both grow till the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, 'Collect the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.' "
Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43

Why would anyone want to leave weeds in their field? Why let the weeds suck energy from the wheat? Maybe there is value in the up-close awareness of the weeds, just as there is value in beginning to see the shadow within ourselves. Maybe in seeing the weeds/shadows for what they are in ourselves, we can less often follow their urgings and choose the better part. The struggle won't always remain, but in this time, seeing the struggle for what it is, makes a way forward to fruitfulness.

July Building Update

The Building Committee continues to work with our engineers, architects, and general contractor through the county permitting and preliminary site planning processes. In addition, the Finance Committee is working with our proposed lenders to finalize the relevant loans. Although you may not be seeing much visible progress yet, there is much building-related activity behind the scenes. Although dates continue to be fluid, we expect to be on the county’s September planning commission meeting (there is no August meeting) and to break ground on the new building sometime in the fall. Bob Payne is the chair of the building committee. EMAIL BOB

Our Next Chapter

As we prepare for The Next Chapter in the life of the church at SGUMC, let us employ scripture to pause, pray, and feel peace in the assurance of God’s perfect plan for our lives. This week we wrap our traveling middle school youth and adult leaders in prayer as they serve the community of Raleigh, North Carolina.
John 13:15
For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.
PRAYER
Gracious God, we pray for the safety and fruitfulness of our middle school youth traveling to and serving in Raleigh, North Carolina this week. In John 13:15, your son Jesus tells us about the example of service to others he has made for our lives and that we should also serve others. Our youth have sacrificially taken that call to heart and are acting as Christ’s hands and feet in mission. Guard and protect these youth and their adult leaders. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
