Taize Worship

-- a calm, peaceful, meditative combination
of scripture reading, prayer, and music

A gift from our Music & Arts Ministry to our Shady Grove congregation and community.

Please note - after much prayerful consideration, our Music and Arts Ministry at Shady Grove has made the decision to discontinue our Taize worship services for the remainder of 2010.  We suggest that you visit Richmond Hill retreat center for their monthly Taize services held on the first Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m..

      “
Nothing is more conducive to communion
with the Living God than a meditative
common prayer with singing that never ends,
but continues in the silence of one’s heart,
        when one is alone again.”
          Brother Roger Shultz

Scripture reading and the singing of simple
         yet beautiful melodies are interspersed
          throughout the service, drawing those
gathered into 15 minutes of silent meditation
            followed by intercessory prayer.

A Brief History of Taize

In 1940, when World War II started, A Swiss Protestant, Brother Roger, founded the order of Taize.
Taize is a tiny community just north of Cluny in the southeastern part of France.
Brother Roger and other Protestant and Catholic brothers developed a monastic prayer cycle
of silence, music, scripture, and contemplation.
Their desire was to create a community of hospitality and trust for people from all over the world,
and particularly a place of refuge for those from Eastern Europe.
Today, the Taize Community in the French town is made up of more than 100 brothers
from Catholic and Protestant backgrounds and from more than 25 countries.
Since the 1950’s, young people have been visiting Taize from all over the world
in increasingly growing numbers.
Some weeks there are as many as 7,000 gathered from 70 nations.
And all over the world, churches of many different denominations hold Taize prayer services.
